Celebrating Water: Protecting Our Watershed in Northwestern Ontario

Celebrating Water: Protecting Our Watershed in Northwestern Ontario

Water is at the heart of life in Northwestern Ontario. From the vast expanse of Lake Superior to the intricate network of rivers and streams that sustain our communities, water connects us all. March is a special month to reflect on this vital resource, with World Water Day (March 22), International Day of Rivers (March 14), and Canada Water Week serving as key reminders of the importance of protecting our waterways.

Why These Days Matter

  • International Day of Rivers (March 14) celebrates free-flowing waterways and highlights the need to protect them from pollution and disruption.
  • Canada Water Week (March 17-23) unites communities across the country in recognizing the importance of clean water.
  • World Water Day (March 22) is a global event focused on solutions to water challenges, emphasizing conservation and sustainable use.

Taking Action in Northwestern Ontario

As stewards of the Lake Superior watershed, we have a responsibility to protect our freshwater resources. EcoSuperior's programs provide tangible ways to make a difference:

  • Adopt a Drain – A simple act with big impact! Keep storm drains clear of debris, litter, and pollutants that wash into our waterways. Small actions, like sweeping up leaves and picking up trash, help prevent pollution from entering our rivers and lakes. To view and adopt available drains, click here!
  • Rain Gardens – These natural filtration systems help absorb and clean stormwater before it reaches our waterways. Consider planting one at home or supporting community efforts to create more green infrastructure. To find out more, click here.
  • LittaTraps – Installed in storm drains, these filters capture trash and contaminants before they flow into our rivers and lakes. By supporting programs like this, we reduce the impact of urban runoff. Learn more here.
  • Spring Up to Clean Up – Join our annual clean-up event to keep our shorelines clean and prevent trash in our waterways. Watch for sign ups to begin in early April.

How You Can Help

  1. Conserve water – Simple actions like fixing leaks and using rain barrels reduce strain on our water systems.
  2. Make Eco-Friendly choices – Choose eco-friendly household products and dispose of hazardous waste properly. Find some ideas here.
  3. Get involved – Participate in local cleanups, advocacy efforts, or EcoSuperior's programs to make a direct impact.
  4. Reduce Runoff Pollution: Keep chemicals, pet waste, and litter out of storm drains — they lead directly to our waterways.

Every action counts when it comes to protecting our water. This March, let's unite to celebrate, conserve, and take steps toward a healthier watershed for future generations.
